The fuel crisis worsened and the rain poured down in the days leading up to our trip to Brownsea Island, but we were fortunate to be able to go ahead with our plans, and on a glorious Autumn day 100 of us renewed our Promises standing on the island. Young and not-so-young thought back to the very foundations of Scouting some 93 years ago - the Movement of which we are proud to be members today. Everyone enjoyed the day, proving that there is still room for peace and tranquility amidst today’s theme parks and speedy pace of life. |

SCOUTS |

Thirty three scouts from 1st Eastcote, 5th Eastcote and 6th Northwood attended the recent County Water Activity weekend at Longridge. The seven activities sessions over the weekend included Canadian Canoeing, Kayaking, Rowing, Pulling, Dragon Boating and Power Boating, Sailing and a land based ‘It’s a Knockout’ |
1E and 6N set up joint camp together in good weather on the Friday. As 1E leaders and a 6N leader were |
supervising seven canoeing sessions over the weekend, the catering was provided by 6N, a successful and practical working partnership. |
It started to rain during Friday night and continued until Saturday evening without let up - Still it was a water activity weekend! 5th Eastcote arrived early on the Saturday, in the pouring rain, in time for the start of the first session. |
Fortunately the rain eased off in the evening allowing the central catering team to provide a bar-b-que for all the participants, leaders and instructors about 260 people all told, a magnificent effort. |
There were about 210 scouts in camp from the County so the District were well represented accounting for 15% of the total. |
Fortunately the sun shone and the breeze blew on the Sunday adding to the fun of the activities - the sailing boats did not have to be towed along by a power boat! It also allowed us to strike camp with the tentage nearly, but not quite dry enough to avoid hanging it. |
This was the second County Water Activity Weekend, the next one should be in 2002. A well worth-while event allowing the scouts to participate in a variety of new activities. |
