CUB SCOUTS

As we start 2002 and with the challenges which will lie ahead of us with PRI, we wish a very happy new year to all involved in Cub Scouting.

The 85 th birthday party in November was attended by around 120 Cubs and held in

the magnificent new Sports Centre at St Martin’s School. With games, singing,

refreshments (including birthday cake — thanks Margaret), Promise renewal and much more besides we hope that we gave the Cubs an evening to remember. Our thanks to all concerned, and especially the Headmaster and staff of St Martin’s for their willing co-operation.

District events this year will start with a badge afternoon on Saturday 2nd February, concentrating on the safety related Activity Badges. This will be at Hillside School (opposite 1 Northwood HQ) and more details are with CSLs.

HEATHER PEDEL

Heather is well known in the District as a stalwart of the Cub Scout section, formerly

holding warrants as CSL at 2nd Northwood and subsequently DCSL. For the last three

years or so she has held the title of Honorary Scouter and continued her valuable work in the District. During 2001 she notched up an incredible 50 years of adult service to Cub Scouting (having previously worked in Wembley District). At the Cub Scout birthday party in November, she was presented with an Edinburgh crystal vase (and some flowers to go in it!) to mark her achievements. The local

Gazette were also present to record the occasion. Well done Heather and keep up the good work for many more years to come.

MAYOR’S CHARITY APPEAL

The Mayor’s Charity Appeal for 2001/02 is aimed at providing grants of up to £750 to

young people’s organisations in the Borough. Detailed guidelines are available from Steve L’Estrange or the DC or District Chairman. Applications must be made by 16th May 2002 and grants will not be made towards the purchase of mini-buses.

LYNDA JACKSON MACMILLAN CENTRE

A cheque for £124 has been sent to the Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre at Mount

Vernon Hospital to assist their work with cancer patients and their carers. This

represented the proceeds of the collection at our Celebration of Light, and a letter has

been received asking us to pass on their thanks to all concerned.

Queen’s Golden Jubilee Badges

These cost £1.00 each and can be ordered from Ant Knott. They can be worn on uniform.

Charity Event

On 10th November, 1st Northwood ran a Race Night in order to raise money for the Chalfont Heights Development Fund. It was a most enjoyable and successful evening and raised a total of £181.00.
